Amid recent house burnings, massive foreclosures and a stalled economy the Highland Park Branch of the NAACP is making sure that Highland Park residents are warm and fed.  Highland Park is full of many residents who don’t have utility service. Many are living without heat without food. In a recent meeting of the Warmth & Safety Roundtable, a 211 representative claimed that the number two request from 48203 is for food.

The Highland Park Branch National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is pleased to announce the establishment of our Community Clothing Closet and Food Pantry.  The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all people and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.  The NAACP firmly believes that as an organization it must play a critical role in addressing both national and local issues that impact the workers and families in this country.  It is equally important that our local Highland Park NAACP branch continues to focus its efforts on issues and challenges that are unique to their communities. We have identified food access and adequate clothing as two key areas of need. The Clothing Closet and Food Pantry hours are as follows:

Every Wednesday: 2:00p.m. – 6:00p.m.
Every Saturday: 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Every Sunday: 1:00p.m – 3:00p.m.

Please join the Highland Park Branch of the NAACP by partnering with us. We need our partners to do three simple things:
1. Add the Community Clothing Closet and Food Pantry to your community giving priority
2. Collect and Donate gently used clothing and non- perishable food items
3. Tell all interested stakeholders, potential volunteers about the Community Clothing Closet and Food Pantry by adding our information to your announcements, newsletter, phone tree or email list

Through our Community Closet, we hope to empower families and individuals. Additionally, our Branch aims to help people take an active role in preserving our civil rights and advocating for social and economic policy change at the local level.  Our approach is to find ways of helping local people get practically involved in making decisions and managing improvements in their neighborhood. We need your support and sponsorship to build up the NAACP Branch in Highland Park in order to help improve the quality of people’s lives, their prospects and potential within the communities where they live, work and play. If you should have additional questions, please feel free to contact Keira Richardson, Coordinator, at 313-867-6363 or via email gsmfoodclothingpantry@gmail.com.
